Test - Ion Transit Cargo Bike Shorts

It is the second year on the market for the clothing line from Ion Products. After a successful first product line in 2013 their latest offerings for 2014 seem to be building on what they have learnt previously. In this case we tested the Transit Cargo shorts from the Roam Series for a few weeks before they are available to the public.

Made of a tough lightweight cordura material they were immediately comfortable and the fit for the indicated XL size was spot on. Fine adjustments are also possible though with the adjustable waste bands around the top of the shorts.

We tested the shorts in a variety of conditions and found their breathability and feel to be excellent, at no point did we feel hot or uncomfortable due to chaffing. The fit is fairly streamlined, which is good as there is no extraneous material to catch on the bike or trail surroundings when moving around on the saddle in technical sections.

For storage the Transit have a few small pockets, with two more added on the front compared to last years model, we actually found the pockets were positioned well so that whatever is in them does not annoy the rider when on the trail. Our favourite feature on these shorts was the venting areas located on the back of the shorts below the waste band. This actually made temperature control better and we found ourselves feeling more comfortable when sweating significantly after riding hard on climbs etc. The closure points and hardware items were great and will last, with the front popper closure also being complimented with a velcro surround for added security.

The colour option seemed fairly neutral and fits well with most other bike clothing, not being too flashy and at the same time bold enough to look good. In general we prefer a conservative look for everyday riding, plus colours that don’t show dirt too much or fade quickly after lots of washing or rough treatment, in this sense the colour option works well.

Conclusion
For those looking for a comfortable lightweight breathable bike short we actually think these shorts are pretty good. They are stretchable enough to be comfortable when moving and streamlined enough not to get caught on anything and retain a flattering fit. The quality of finish is high and these shorts do reflect their price point well. These are ideal trail shorts for everyday riding in our opinion, that also look good off the bike. We would like to find a larger side/back pocket on the leg for larger items for those who prefer to ride without backpacks but in no way does that detract from the comfort of these shorts. Which in our selection of current riding shorts these stand out as the most comfortable and best fitting.
